CHARACTER

NAME: Bruce Wayne // Batman
SERIES: Batman (Nolanverse)
HISTORY: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_Begins & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Knight_(film)
TIMELINE: Post TDK
PERSONALITY:
Bruce could be shortly described as a shattered soul. Caught between two times, he is constantly trying to reconcile his memories of a happy but distant past with a dank and dreary present. He desires to create a better, safer, more ideal Gotham, something his father envisioned, however he decided to take more creative measures.

There are essentially three faces to Bruce. The one which most people see is “Brucie”, the playboy without a care in the world. The irresponsible son of a great man who has never really lived up to the high expectations left by his parent’s legacy. Unreliable and unpredictable, this side of Bruce is a farce. It’s the face he puts up so most are thrown off the trail of what his night activities really include. Many are attracted to his charm and easy going personality; he gets along easily in nearly any social situation, managing to blend in to the environment he needs to. However, despite fitting in easily, he always manages to make himself stick out, just enough to make himself an unlikely candidate for the Batman.

At the opposite end of this spectrum is the Batman. The terror in the night, the very incarnation of fear, Batman is structured to be a guardian to those he protects and a fear monger to those oppose him. While he retains some of the qualities of Bruce, Batman, for all intents and purposes, is a completely different person. He’s driven to the point of obsession, has tunnel vision and could be considered paranoid. He sees nothing beyond the ultimate goal and will stop at almost nothing to reach that goal.

Then finally there is Bruce. The most often argued “true” face. The one who is in the cave with the mask off around Alfred and very few other people. Determined to a fault, serious, and isolated this is the side of Bruce least often seen. He’s at his most relaxed, if such a word could ever be used to describe Bruce Wayne, and not trying to put on a show for others. This is the Bruce who hasn’t gotten over the death of his parents, who is torn between what’s best for Gotham and what’s best for himself. He would argue that Batman won’t become a permanent part of his nightlife, when it is obvious to most that it’s about the become a dominant part of his personality. He’s often seen denying the obvious, perhaps not to the degree he did when he was younger, but certainly enough so he misses the fact that the woman he has been carrying a torch over for years is about to leave him for another man.

That said, Bruce is very much a broken soul. Torn between three vastly different personalities, caught permanently in the tragedy and shock of his parent’s death, it cannot be said that he has a healthy sense of “self”. Particularly in the transition from The Dark Knight and Batman Begins we begin to see his transformation from being Bruce Wayne who sometimes masquerades as Batman to something much more complex. Slowly the line between Bruce and Batman is being blurred. While he isn’t questioning the difference himself, everyone around him seems to be question where one begins and the other ends.

This schism between himself and the Batman becomes most obvious in his relationship with Rachel. Rachel is one of the last things remaining from his childhood, one of the only people whom he drops any sort of façade around, however he is blind to the fact that she is changing beyond him. She sees him becoming more and more obsessed with the image and fear he must create by being Batman, and she doesn’t want to be a part of what looks to become an endless whirlpool. Bruce, however, expresses that this is only a part time job that he’ll be able to stop and they can continue on the path that they were heading out on when they were children. This sort of denial of the present and the clinging to the past is something which is integral to Bruce.

Seeing as this is purely Nolanverse Bruce, he isn't quite a team player yet. He does things on his own unless he feels he needs to bring a third party in. While it can be said that he wants to protect others from his own-- dangerous hobbies, in all honesty it is also as much about his own savior complex, the need to be the hero and save people. While he accepts help from certain people, namely Alfred, Lucius, and Gordon, he always tries to keep them at a distance. He'd much rather take the burden of the mission upon himself rather than try and recruit people into his personal crusade.

ABILITIES/POWERS: the goddamn batman
Honestly, in the Nolan movies he hasn't been shown to be the complete godmodder that his other counter parts are. He is shown to be skilled at martial arts, have an understanding of technology as well as business, and of course, deductive skills.

SAMPLES

FIRST PERSON:
[Why hello everyone. Have the pearly white smile of Bruce Wayne on your PORTAL]

Excuse me, I was just wondering if there was a way to talk to the Queen and King? I understand that they're probably very busy people, however I would like to have a discussion with them. Specifically about this world and how it works.

I was also wondering about the conditions of our stay. Perhaps if I were able to do some sort of task for their royal highnesses they would be more agreeable to the idea of me returning home.

I have to think the ones who run this place must be reasonable people. This is a peaceful city, however I don't think it could honestly benefit from my presence.
[Schomoozing? Yes. Bruce is never past sucking up. Playing the game, as it were.]

As a side note, does anyone here know how to make a good pot of coffee? My butler isn’t here and I’m finding myself missing the comforts of home.

THIRD PERSON:

Was what he was doing right?

It was a question that was often asked of him, usually by Alfred and Lucius. But more and more often by Gordon, by the city of Gotham herself. At first it seemed clear that he was doing good, that his nighttime activities were actually serving the city, and making it a much safer place for the citizens. However, more recent events had begun to shape and mold the opinion otherwise.

Batman look-a-likes, the Joker, Harvey, Rachel. Oh god, Rachel. She hadn’t deserved any of what happened. Her more than anyone. These were all signs of his own failings, his own inability to predict everything, to save everyone. It had seemed that he may actually be able to do it at first, be able to swoop in, like Zorro, and save the day, leaving his mark. Making people understand that Gotham had a protector.

It wasn’t that simple anymore.

Maybe it never really was.

He stood on the edge of a precipice; he understood that now more than ever. He could either turn around and leave, watch his city rot and crumble while he idled away his life; trying to do as much good as he could from the sidelines. Or he could take the plunge, step over the edge and fall directly into the decay, let the darkness consume him.

“Master Bruce, the paper.”

Alfred almost startled Bruce out of his thoughts.

“Thank you, Alfred.” He replied a bit slower than usual, he was tired after all. He had been tired since Rachel’s death, Harvey’s fall--- and Batman’s fall as well.
Alfred gives him a look, one he had become more and more familiar with. It was a sort of concern specific to Bruce’s own grief. He knew what it meant immediately: I’m here for you, don’t let go quite yet.

However, as time drew on, longer and longer, Bruce wasn’t sure that hanging on was an option anymore. He wasn’t any good to Gotham as just Bruce Wayne.

Perhaps it was time to take the plunge.
